FAMRI in new project

This spring, Faroe Marine Research Institute (FAMRI) received funding from the EU for participation in the large EPOC project, which studies the thermohaline circulation—often referred to here as the “Gulf Stream”—and how interconnected this circulation is. FAMRI’s work will focus on examining the current across the Iceland Ridge and the flow in the Shetland Channel. A researcher was sought to work on this.

The EU project EPOC (Explaining and Predicting the Ocean Conveyor) began in 2022 and involves 21 different research institutes. Several of these institutes measure the strength of the thermohaline circulation elsewhere in the Atlantic Ocean, for example at 26°N between the Canary Islands and Florida, and further north in the Fram Strait between Greenland and Svalbard. However, none of them take measurements on the Greenland-Scotland Ridge, on which the Faroe Islands lie. The EU has now launched an expansion initiative, called Hop-on, which allows certain countries to apply to join projects that are already funded. The aim is both to strengthen research capacity in certain countries and to enhance existing projects if this benefits the project. Therefore, FAMRI had the opportunity to apply for participation in the EPOC project, thereby extending the project with measurements from the Greenland-Scotland Ridge.
