Live temperature measurements from Jákup Sverri
It is now possible to read the temperature where the trawl of Jákup Sverri has been towed, just a few minutes after each haul. A temperature sensor has been attached to the trawl, which sends data directly to the internet, to an open database.
Jákup Sverri will soon carry out survey trawls on Føroyabanki, and with this new tool it is now possible to follow, almost in real time, how the temperature on the bank is, haul by haul.
Everyone can view the data on this very user-friendly portal. It is also possible to look back in time, for example to see the survey trawling that has just taken place on the continental shelf, and to download the data, for instance in Excel format. This is a quick and effortless way to obtain a large amount of new data, which can support the scientific research that Jákup Sverri is already conducting.

This is a collaboration with the company Ocean Data Network, which manages the project Fishing Vessel Ocean Observing Network. FVON has equipped many fishing vessels with this type of measuring equipment, both in the Faroe Islands and in other countries, making it possible to collect large amounts of temperature data while fishing is taking place.
The role of the Marine Research Institute in the project is to compare the regular temperature measurements carried out with the research vessel with the results from this temperature sensor, thereby ensuring accuracy.
This citizen science initiative can therefore both expand the data foundation and lead to better knowledge about ocean temperatures, to the benefit of both marine research and fisheries.
